"Sarah and Katie" Set Requirements
The action takes place in six locations: Miss Mulkey's classroom, Miss
Lane's auditorium, a hallway between them, the schoolyard in front of
them, the Abbotts' kitchen and the Rivers's living room. The Rivers's
living room can be brought on downstage right before scene three and
removed after scene five; it does not have to remain onstage throughout
the play. All other areas are on-stage at all times and the actors move
among them, keeping set changes to a delightful minimum.
In the original production, the auditorium set included Miss Lane's desk,
the frame of a proscenium arch, a three-paneled flat stored against the
back "wall" of the auditorium, and piano benches for the children. When
it was time for the play within the play, the flat was opened (revealing
Collette's bedroom), a cardboard dresser panel was attached to the rotated
desk, and the benches were pushed together to make the bed. Sarah's
struggle to remove the dresser panel so she can return Miss Lane's
notebook leads to the discovery of the missing ring.
