Constraints for UMM's Academic Calendars

See below for the constraints that are Required or Preferred



  1. (REQUIRED) VITAL issue: We have to count 39 weeks from the Monday following Commencement day backwards and that is the Monday that 9-mth faculty (whatever the code is) starts on their payroll.

  2. (Required:) Fall & Spring semesters shall have 15 weeks or 75 or 74 days of instruction. (We may lose one day (Labor Day) for Fall and one (MLK Day) for Spring).

  3. (Required:) Both semesters should have 4 days for final exams.

  4. (UM-Morris - voted yes in 2000) 2-day Fall Break in Fall semesters.

  5. (Preferred - not required) Spring break during the Spring Semester starts at the end of the middle (8th week) of Spring Semester, ie. it falls on the 9th week of the semester.

  6. Staff (USA/TEAMSTERS/AFSCME/etc) has 7 observed holidays and 4 floating holidays.

  7. (Preferred - not required) tudents & faculty would like the last day of final exams in Fall to be at least a week before Christmas.

  8. (preferred - not required) We should allow 5 working days for New and Returning Faculty workshops & orientations, and a 3 or 4 working days of New Student orientation BEFORE the first day of class in Fall semesters.

  9. (preferred- not required) the first day of class NOT earlier than the Monday prior to Labor Day

  10. (Senate Policies on Study Day: For campuses that choose to have a study day, the final exam period will begin on the second day after classes end, with the day after classes designated as study day. In the event that classes end on a Friday, final exams will not start until the following Monday, and Saturday and Sunday will be designated as study days.)

    (Preferred- not required) A full day of study day before Fall final exams. A full day of study day before Spring final exams.

  11. 3 weeks of winter break between Fall and Spring semesters every year.
