SADD
Students Against Destructive Decisions -- University
of Minnesota, Morris
Here are some rather upsetting facts that barely
begin to scratch the surface of the impacts of drunk driving.
- In 1996, 17,126 people died from drunk driving accidents, or one
every thirty-two minutes. That's up from 1995, when 16,589 people died
in traffic accidents involving a drunk driver.
- 297,000 people are injured in drunk driving accidents per year. That's one
every two minutes.
- Alcohol related crashes cost the people of the United States $44 billion
anually.
- In the past decade alone, drunk driving has killed more than four times
as many people as the Vietnam War.
- An average of eight young people a day died from drunk driving in 1996.
But wait! There is some good news.
- People in the 16-20 year old age group are the most likely than any
other age group to discourage guests or fellow partiers from driving after
consuming alcoholic beverages.
- 16-20- year-old people had the biggest drop in fatal car crashes while
intoxicated. From 1985 to 1994 alcohol related traffic fatalities
dropped 47% for this age group.
