Latex Distribution: either MikTeX or TeX LiveEditor: WinEdt - Windows Editor useful for LaTeX (shareware) or TeXnicCenter - Windows IDE for LaTeX (GNU GPL)
You might need the following to view postscript files: Gsview and Ghostscript
For LaTeX on a Mac platform I suggest the following (I have no personal experience with this software; Mac friends have used it)
CMacTeX (A version of LaTeX for Mac) ♦ OzTeX (A version of LaTeX for Mac)A student who uses LaTeX on Mac recently recommended the following (comments are his):
Texmaker. This is actually cross-platform LaTeX editor that can be used for Windows, Linux, and Mac. It is open source. Others that you pay for might be better, but I thought it was awesome for a college budget of $0 dollars.
Another editor specifically for mac is TeXShop. The editor has some really helpful features for experienced TeX users, but for beginners the previous one is much better. The greatest thing about this site is not the editor but the installation instructions for TeX on mac. First download i-installer from http://ii2.sourceforge.net/ and then follow the installation instructions on the TeXShop page. Using this makes installing TeX on mac easy.
