Curricular Innovations

2005-2007: Econ 3351/Mgmt 3351; Developed a Winter session study abroad course in India titled, Globalization: Examining India’s Social and Economic Development. The course includes lectures, field trips, workshops and service learning opportunities with Indian Non Governmental Organizations. IS 1001: Developed a new course, First Year Seminar: Exploring Public Issues that is targeted at entering freshmen to develop their critical thinking skills and research skills with respect to Human Diversity and current Public Issues. Econ 3501: Developing a service-learning component to the course, Introduction to Econometrics that included seniors from the Benson High school. UMM student developed the survey that was designed to assess local purchasing habits of residents of the city of Benson. The high school students helped enter the data and my students analyzed and documented the results. IS 3100: Developed a new course titled, Leadership and Change, with Prof. Paula O’Loughlin for May session. This course is designed to offer students the foundation of leadership theory, help develop their personal leadership philosophy and provide students with an internship opportunity so that they can apply and develop their skills.

2004-05: Econ 3501; The Econometrics class developed a survey to assess member satisfaction with services offered by the Regional Fitness Center and analyzed the data collected, documented and presented the results.

2003-Present; Developed an online course, Econ 1111, Principles of Microeconomics course for UMM General Education Web course offering, co-taught with Prof. Bart Finzel.

2003-04: Econ 3501 and Mgmt 3201; Developed a service-learning component in both the Econometrics and the Marketing classes. The Econometrics class developed a survey to assess student satisfaction with services offered by the Office of Residential Life at UMM. In addition, this class also developed a survey instrument to assess the impact of the “Big Idea” on High School juniors and UMM students. The “Big Idea,” which was eventually abandoned was the idea that an entering freshman class would travel abroad together as a class in their sophomore year at UMM. One of the students from this class completed the project report as a directed study. The Marketing class collected information related to residential life from various comparable and top ranked colleges and universities across the region and nation and compiled a report presenting their residential life services compared to UMM.

2002-2003: Econ 3501 and Mgmt 3201; Developed a service-learning component in both the Econometrics and Marketing classes. The Econometrics class developed a survey to collect and analyze data to assess the Regional Fitness Center (RFC). The Marketing class conducted several focus group discussions with community members and leaders; and researched other similar fitness centers across our region to develop a marketing plan for the RFC.

2002-present: UMM representative on the All University Study Abroad Group. As part of this team I continue to identify programs across the world that fit the curriculum requirements of the Economics/Management program at UMM and offer students a study abroad experience.

1998-99: IS 3405, Helped develop and team-taught an interdisciplinary course titled, Francophone Experience Across the Black Atlantic. The planning and development of this course involved a five-week trip to West Africa and a two-week trip to the Caribbean.  A Ford Grant funded the development of this course.

1999-present: Econ 3140, Economic Growth and Development. Restructured the course such that student are required to do a group project on the development experience of a lesser-developed country of their choice.  The project involves a paper and a presentation that focuses on the historical experience, geographical constraints, political structure and economic performance (and obstacles) of their selected country. Continue to revamp the class with guest speakers, DVDs on developing countries and offering students different study abroad experiences in developing countries.

1998: Econ 3400-present, Introduction to Econometrics.  Restructured the course such that students are required to do a group project.  The project involves defining a problem, collecting data, and analyzing the data. Some of these projects were presented at an Undergraduate Student Conference, others were developed into Senior Seminar presentations.  Several of our alumni have taken up positions in the workforce that will utilize their skills in econometrics.  Their class projects were a significant factor in their job placement. Continue to revamp the class with service learning projects.

Special Teaching Methods Implemented

2001-present: Incorporated service-learning opportunities into the standard curriculum to support community outreach initiatives and encourage and foster civic responsibility in students. This also helps demonstrate to students the various practical uses of econometric analysis.

1994-present: Divide the class into groups of 2- 4 students who work together on group exercises and semester long projects. Use group exercises in both upper and lower division classes, at the end of each class period, to review and apply tools/subject matter discussed in class to a particular set of problems. Restructured most upper division courses so that students are required to do a semester long group research project to develop critical thinking skills, skills of reciprocity and working together. In addition, students also write short critiques of articles related to the topics discussed in class, that are either reported in the media or academic journals to develop and improve their critical thinking skills.

Other methods regularly used include:

Have students write short critiques of articles related to the subject matter covered in class, that are reported in the popular media to develop their critical thinking skills.

In classes where appropriate I have groups of students work on a country of their choice and analyze the country’s path of development.

Exams are used as a learning tool to analyze a familiar or sometime unfamiliar case with the economic tools/methodology discussed in the class.
