| This work has been described as combining abstract expressionism
with broad bold brushstorkes with elements derived from Rembrandt's early
self-portraits. Abstract Expressionist Self-Portrait was done when
Flack was 21 years old, and portrays the youth of the artist. It also shows
her independence as the work was not acceptable in American art at the
time. The painting gives little information on Flack's gender (Gouma Peterson
26).
This work differs significantly from the self-portraits of Flack's later
career, and shows how her style developed in the next decade. She signed
the work with her last name only, which was common in her work at this
time. |
