Civitas (Four Visions). 1990-91.
Patinated and gilded bronze with black granite base, height 22" with base - Installation in Rock Hill Gateway, South Carolina

The figure shown above is one of the Civitas (Four Visions), a group of sculptures to promote community living, citizenry, and common purpose. These were commissioned to be installed in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Each of the four figures is 22 feet tall and features a different zodiacal sign, facing inward. The model for the figures was a mraathon runner of six feet tall who was independent and strong, features embodied in the scultpures. They are strong, assertive women, rising on their own without the help of a male (Gouma-Peterson 116-120).

The eyes of each sculpture are gently closed. This doesn't seem to be explored in critical reviews of the work, but I find it important. The works seem very peaceful because of this feature.
