Buddha. 1975
Oil over acrylic on wet sanded canvas, 70x96" - Saint Louis Art Museum

Buddha is a work included in Audrey Flack's Gray Border series, in which she expanded her subjects and iconography. The border as part of the painted surface, a style which Flack frequently used.  The ribbon and pearls that extend over the border function as “color intensification and diffusion” (Gouma-Peterson 72)

On one side of this work is the green Buddha (symbolizing the mysterious East); on the other side is a small white statue, symbolizing the mysterious West.  The border slows our participation in the scene, removing it from us slightly. It adds to the mysteriousness of the work (Gouma-Peterson 73).

This work includes the same blue chalice used in Marilyn and World War II. Using objects in more than one painting is common in Flack's work - through this she connects them. Many of the objects she uses are her personal belongings, which add a piece of herself and her emotion to the work.
