CSci 1211 Introduction to LINUX programming environment.

• Log on to any computer in the lab. When logging in the first time, you need to change the password: after you have logged in, type passwd at the prompt and follow the instructions. Make sure to remember your password.
• To start jEdit, type jedit & at the prompt.
• To start a web browser, type mozilla & Bookmark the course page, your bookmark will not go away.
• To list files in your current directory, type ls
• To change a directory, type cd followed by the name of the directory. To go up in the directory tree, type cd ..
• To find out your current directory, type pwd
• To create a new directory (say, lab4), type mkdir lab4.
• To compile and run your java programs, use javac and java, as usual. Make sure that you are in the same directory as the java files (use pwd to check).
• To copy A file MyFile.java from your current directory to your cda account:

  
  scp MyFile.java jdoe@cda.morris.umn.edu:MyFile.java
  

  (instead of jdoe use your login name). To copy a file from cda, reverse the order of the arguments:

  
  scp jdoe@cda.morris.umn.edu:MyFile.java MyFile.java

• Don't forget to logout when finished (click on Action in the left upper corner of the screen, choose log out, click OK in the dialog box).
