Women & Art

Fall 2016

First:    Preliminary bibliography & research status report due:  Thurs. Oct. 27

For the status report please provide me with an informal narrative describing: what your specific topic focus will be regarding your chosen artist; what questions you are hoping to investigate & answer;  how your research is progressing; and any problems you might be encountering (approx. length: ½ to 1 page; electronic submission is fine for this). Below that, provide a bibliographic listing of at least 4 sources that you think you will make use of for your presentation/annotated bibliography, in appropriate citation format (MLA or Chicago Style are preferred for art history). This will give me a chance to see how your research is progressing (before it’s too late!), and to give you feedback on citing sources. No annotations are needed at this time.

 THE PRESENTATION:

On the scheduled date at the end of the semester (to be determined after fall break) you will have approximately 15 minutes to present your research on some aspect of (or theme within) a woman artist’s creative achievements. You will likely be introducing the artist to us, so cover some biographical essentials, but don’t let that be the focus of the presentation. Instead, discuss and analyze a few (probably no more than 5) works of art which illustrate that particular theme. Be sure to indicate whether any interpretations of the works that you discuss were made by other scholars, or whether they are your own thoughts (especially desirable!).

You can either speak from notes, or read well from a paper (figure on 2 minutes/per page if the text is written out; thus approximately 7 pages (double-spaced) for a 15 minute presentation). Be sure to explain (relatively briefly) any artistic terminology that we have not already used in class. There will then be about 5 minutes for questions/comments from the class following your presentation. You are not expected to know everything, so don’t worry about this portion!

Visuals: definitely necessary!  This can be done as a Powerpoint slide show (or other presentation program). Please keep it relatively simple in format. *Be sure to have high resolution images! It is usually a good idea to check how they project in advance –

just ask me to help you with that, before/after class sometime.

We can handle virtually any format: web access, CD, jump/flash drive. You can also show clips from a DVD/VHS tape/website, but keep this short! (you will not get extra time)

Evaluation: will be based primarily on the clarity, organization, and content of the presentation. You will be asked to stop if you are going much beyond 15 minutes. Students in the class will provide written comments regarding the presentation, although Prof. Dabbs will determine the grade. I will email your presentation grade to you; the anonymous evals. will be given to you a few days later.

Overall, the presentation will count 15% (in combination with the annotated bibliography)

Please ask me for any assistance that might be needed along the way!
