May 18-June 5, 2006 This program will study the ways that history, myth and storytelling intertwine to create Moroccan identity. We will examine the representation of the multiple layers of populations who have lived in this North African country, including the Imazighen, the Romans, the Turks, the Arabs, the Jews, the Spanish, and the French. We will read some history to see how it is at times twisted into myth, and we will also look at different methods of telling stories: through an oral style, through literature, through weaving, through ceramics, through music. The highlight of the month will be a camel ride into the Sahara, where the group will sit around the fire at night and listen to stories told by a professional storyteller. Cost: $4600 |
