Course description:
By taking Fren 2002, you are continuing your trajectory toward becoming fully fluent in one of the most important languages in the world, used in many professional fields, such as diplomacy, business, art, politics, science, and math, and spoken by over 274 million people from every continent! Representing a great variety of people, races, religions, and cultures, the French language is a vital tool for becoming a global citizen and for developing your intercultural competence, both central goals of UMM’s Mission Statement. In this class, we will work together to become active members of the global francophone community by enlarging your vocabulary, honing your grasp of grammatical knowledge, refining your reading, listening, and speaking skills, and developing the cultural knowledge necessary for understanding and communicating with French-speaking people. Studying French is opening yourself to the world: Get ready to jump in!
Course Structure and Expectations:
- This course will be conducted almost entirely in French because research shows that immersion is the best way to acquire a language.
- Fren 2002 has a dual structure:
- You will learn most of the material on your own by studying the textbook and by doing the daily homework in the workbook. The workbook is a vital component of the class and you need to devote considerable time to it. Skipping the workbook will quickly lead to a low grade.
- Class time will be spent reinforcing what you did in the workbook by practicing grammar and vocabulary, answering questions and clarifying material, and speaking with each other in large and small groups. To be able to participate, you are expected to come to class having finished all of the assignments listed on the syllabus. Do not fall behind! You should be willing to enthusiastically participate in all class activities.
- NOTE: We may not cover all section of the textbook in class, but you are responsible for all pages listed on the syllabus. In other words, you are responsible for your own education in this class.
- Because class time is devoted to essential language practice, attendance is required (see details below). Your final grade will be reduced 5% per absence after three absences (one week’s worth of class time).
Course objectives:
In French 2002, we will hone your abilities in the four skills of language learning (speaking, listening, reading, and writing). Following the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages’ (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines, Fren 2002 seeks to increase students’ French skills to an intermediate low to intermediate-mid proficiency level (see the ACTFL “Can-Do Statements” to assess where you are in acquiring the French language. We will accomplish this goal by focusing on the following main course objectives of Fren 2002:
- we will broaden your mastery of vocabulary so you have words to express yourself more precisely;
- we will polish your grammar so you can communicate in a more intellectually sophisticated manner;
- we will continue to broaden your understanding of French and Francophone cultures through various cultural activities, such as watching films, reading a novel, listening to music, and engaging in other on-line activities.

- Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World, through language and culture study;
- Intellectual and Practical Skills, including inquiry and analysis, critical thinking, and written and oral communication;
- An Understanding of the Roles of Individuals in Society, through active involvement with diverse communities and challenges. We will especially hone our civic knowledge and engagement—local and global, and our intercultural knowledge and competence;
- Capacity for Integrative Learning, including skills for sustained learning and personal development.

Assignment Descriptions:
This course is premised on the assumption that you will study and learn key concepts at home, so we can work with them in class. Therefore, all homework must be completed by the beginning of class on the date indicated. Please do not do your homework the hour right before we meet: give yourself time to process the material. We will do the following assignments, all of which are designed to help you meet the course goals:
Examens écrits: |
There will be five written exams, including the final, which will cover vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing and listening skills. It is important to memorize vocabulary and grammar as you go along and to not cram the night before the tests, since cramming does not lead to truly acquiring a language. Makeup exams are not allowed, except in exceptional cases. All exam dates can be found on the course calendar below and on-line. The final exam will be cumulative. |
Examens oraux: |
There will be four oral exams this semester, to assess your speaking and listening skills (pronunciation, comprehension, and communicative success), as well as your mastery of vocabulary and grammar. Makeup exams are not allowed, except in exceptional cases. Approximate dates for your oral exams can be found on the course calendar below, but the actual dates and times will be determined by sign-up sheets. |
Rédactions: |
You will write four papers (rédactions) based on the themes of the chapters. Each rédaction must be typed and double-spaced. I will give you details concerning each rédaction as we get closer to its due date. |
Exposé culturel: |
Each student will do one 10 minute oral report in French about an aspect of Francophone culture we will be studying this term. You will begin your report by leading class discussion of the “Galérie des créateurs” of your chapter, and then you will augment that information by presenting further research you have done. Your exposé should be a sort of show-and-tell, incorporating cooking, music, PowerPoint images, etc. You will be graded on content, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, professionalism, organization and time management. |
Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran, interrogations et devoirs divers: |
We will be reading Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt this semester, and there will be comprehension questions and quizzes corresponding to the novel. There will also be quizzes on vocabulary the first day we begin a new chapter of Imaginez, as well as other quizzes at various times. Quizzes will not always be announced in advance. This grading category will also include any miscellaneous activities assigned. |
Student Activities Manual (SAM, or cahier): |
Practice makes perfect. This old adage applies to languages, which cannot be mastered without usage, drills, and exercises. Some people love workbooks and some hate them. It doesn’t matter to me which category you are in, but in either case, please recognize that doing workbook activities is an absolute must, like lifting weights in sports or practicing scales in music. Take it very seriously. Doing your SAM (cahier) activities is your main learning activity for this class and sets the stage for everything else. To do them correctly, please follow this procedure:

Participation: |
Developing your speaking and listening skills, which is a crucial goal in French 2002, requires daily practice. A significant portion of your grade is therefore based upon daily attendance, preparedness, and participation. Do not fall behind: language learning is cumulative, so the more you miss class or arrive late or unprepared, the less likely you will be to do well later in the semester.

Cultural Activities Points (CAP): |
You will earn 10 points for completing cultural activities outside of class for a minimum of 60 minutes per week. The goal of this activity is to give you the freedom to explore French-speaking cultures according to your own interests and also to expose you to authentic uses of the French language. The emphasis of the activities must be on cultural products created in French and Francophone places. Doing your homework does not count for CAP points, nor does watching or listening to something produced in English and subtitled or dubbed in French. You may:

For all work in this class, you may use: 1) our class textbook; 2) a hard copy French-English dictionary; 3) a verb conjugation book and 4) bonpatron.com and 5) your brain. Nothing else is allowed.
You are encouraged to work with other students in Fren 2002 on daily assignments and in study groups, but all work turned in must be entirely your own. Group answers are not acceptable. You are welcome to consult with more advanced students, including tutors and native speakers on campus for study tips, explanations, additional exercises and drills, but all work turned in must be entirely your own. Work edited by someone else is not acceptable. You may consult hardcopy French-English dictionaries (available in the reference section of Brigg’s Library and for sale in the bookstore), but you must not ask anyone to correct your work, borrow material from the internet or turn in any work that has been completed with the help of any type of translator.
***The following are considered cheating*** : plagiarizing; using translators of any kind (including the translator your word processor may have) or any other on-line source; turning in work someone else did; having a native speaker edit your work; using another person’s answers on a test; and any other activities that result in work that you have not done yourself. Engaging in these or other dishonest behaviors will result in a 0 on the assignment in question and in your being reported to the Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs.
