Extra credit opportunities

You will have a number of chances to earn extra credit during the semester, and extra credit points will be added to your lecture quiz point total. Each student is eligible for up to 30 extra credit points during the semester (the approximate equivalent of 3 lecture quizzes). Below are some ways by which students can earn extra credit, but I am also open to other suggestions.

  1. Attend an approved campus event (lecture, performance, seminar, etc.) and submit a brief statement summarizing its relevance to the Earth sciences. (typically up to 10 points possible per event)
  2. Write a short summary report (2-5 pages max.) about any geologic feature in Minnesota or the surrounding region that interests you. Be as specific and descriptive as you can, and include any pertinent figures, maps, or images you can find. Also include specific references for your sources of information and figures. (15 points possible per report)
  3. Write a short summary report (1-2 pages) about a current news item that involves or is related to geology. Be as specific and descriptive as you can, and include any pertinent figures, maps, or images you can find. Also include the source article or report. (10 points possible per report)
  4. Write a short summary biography (2-5 pages max.) of an important geologist or scientist in a related field (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) who made significant contributions to our understanding of the Earth. Describe the person's major scientific contributions and their impact on the Earth sciences. Be sure to include specific references for your sources. (15 points possible per report)
